AI visibility audit vs SEO audit: what is different?
An SEO audit checks whether your pages can rank in search results and earn the click. An AI visibility audit checks whether AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity can read your pages, quote a passage from them, and credit you for it.
The two share a foundation, but they look for different things above it and measure success differently. This guide sets out where they overlap, what each one misses, and whether you need both.
Key takeaways
- An SEO audit asks whether a page can rank and be clicked. An AI visibility audit asks whether a passage can be read, quoted and credited by an AI assistant.
- They share a foundation: crawlable, indexable pages, sitemaps and structured data. Microsoft says the traditional SEO fundamentals still matter for AI answers.
- They part ways on four things: which crawlers are let in, JavaScript, whether the page or the passage is judged, and how success is measured.
- A site can do well in one and poorly in the other. Two of the best-ranked sites we tested scored in the mid-60s for AI visibility.
- Get the SEO basics right first, then run the AI visibility audit, and measure the two separately.
What does each audit ask?
Each audit starts from a different question. Take someone searching "how long does a dishwasher last". An SEO audit asks where your page would appear in the list of results, and whether its title would win the click.
An AI visibility audit asks whether an assistant answering the same question could fetch your page, find a sentence that answers it, and name your site as the source. The first is about a page earning a position; the second is about a passage earning a mention.
Where do an AI visibility audit and an SEO audit overlap?
They overlap on the foundation: pages that can be crawled and indexed, a working sitemap, canonical tags, structured data and clear headings. Both kinds of search depend on these. Google says its AI Overviews have no additional requirements beyond being indexed and eligible to show a snippet.
Microsoft's Bing team makes the same point: in its October 2025 guidance on appearing in AI answers, it says the traditional SEO fundamentals still matter. So a good SEO audit's crawling section is also the first part of an AI visibility audit.
What does an SEO audit miss?
An SEO audit usually misses four things that decide whether AI assistants can use a site:
- AI crawlers by name. SEO audits test Googlebot and Bingbot. AI assistants use their own crawlers, which robots.txt and firewalls treat separately, and OpenAI says a site that blocks OAI-SearchBot will not appear in ChatGPT search answers.
- JavaScript. Google renders JavaScript before indexing, so SEO audits rarely flag it. But when Vercel measured AI crawler traffic, it found that none of the major AI crawlers rendered JavaScript, apart from Google's Gemini and Apple's Applebot.
- Passages, not pages. Microsoft explains that assistants break content down into smaller, structured pieces rather than reading a page top to bottom. So the opening lines of each section matter, not just the page as a whole.
- Sources and identity. Whether facts are linked to their sources, and whether it is clear which organisation and which author stand behind a page.
What does an AI visibility audit leave out?
An AI visibility audit leaves out most of what makes an SEO audit long. It does not track keyword rankings, analyse backlinks, measure page speed or Core Web Vitals, or dig into the finer points of technical SEO such as international versions of a site.
Those still matter for search, and search still feeds many AI answers. An AI visibility audit is an addition to SEO work, not a replacement for it. Ours, for instance, makes no attempt to cover any of those.
How is success measured differently?
SEO success is measured in positions, clicks and visits. AI visibility success is measured in mentions and citations, because many people read the answer and never click.
Pew Research found that people clicked a normal result in 8% of Google searches with an AI summary, against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary in only 1%.
Positions do not carry over either. SparkToro found that AI assistants almost never give the same list of brands twice, so the useful figure is how often you are mentioned across many answers. Our guide to tracking brand mentions in AI shows how to measure it.
Can a site pass one audit and fail the other?
Yes, and well-known sites show it. When we tested our checker on 32 well-known websites in October 2026, developer.mozilla.org scored 65 and gov.uk 64, though both rank extremely well in search.
Neither lost points on access. They lost them on things search rankings do not depend on: developer.mozilla.org had no Organization data and no structured data on the pages we read, and neither named the authors of its articles.
The reverse happens too: a small, carefully built site can score well for AI visibility long before it ranks for anything.
How does AI visibility compare with PR measurement?
In one way, AI visibility is closer to public relations than to SEO. PR has long measured share of voice, and the terms in which a brand is mentioned. Share of voice is the proportion of all the mentions in a market that go to one brand.
Tracking AI answers works the same way, counting mentions and checking what is said, not positions.
The difference is cause and effect. A PR team earns mentions from journalists; an AI visibility audit looks at what on your own site helps an assistant mention you. The two support each other, because the reviews and press coverage PR produces are among the sources assistants cite.
Do you need both audits, and which comes first?
Most businesses that get customers from search need both. Start with the SEO basics, because a page that cannot be indexed will not be cited either. Then run an AI visibility audit, which takes the same foundation and checks what the SEO audit does not.
For agencies, the AI visibility audit works well as an addition to an existing SEO audit rather than a separate project. Our step-by-step audit guide has every check, and what an AI visibility audit is explains why each part matters.
